Tips for Planning Your Trip to Iquitos, Peru
The Amazon rainforest is closer than you may think...
To travel to Caya Shobo you will need to fly to Iquitos airport in Peru. Your journey will typically include a stop in Lima (which is about a 2 hour flight from Iquitos).
Many international flights arrive into Lima late at night, so you may prefer to stay one night in Lima before flying up to Iquitos. If so, we recommend the Wyndham Costa del Sol hotel at Lima airport.
When looking at flights into Iquitos please be sure to arrive between the hours of 8am-7pm. We will send an independent moto-car driver to pick you up and bring you to Caya Shobo which is a short 25 minute drive from Iquitos airport.
Before you leave home you will need to make sure you have considered things like travel insurance, access to funds while away from home and following our Retreat Preparation guidelines.
Here we provide some tips and pointers for ensuring a safe and successful trip to Peru.

Booking flights to Iquitos
Flying through Lima

When searching for your flight options to get to Iquitos airport (IQT), you may find it helpful to first search for flights from your home country to Lima (LIM).
Sometimes it is more affordable this way than booking a single ticket all the way to Iquitos.
For domestic flights between Lima and Iquitos, we recommend Latam Airlines or Star Peru.
It is always important to ensure you allow sufficient layover time in Lima so you don’t miss connecting flights. Typically 3-6 hours is the recommended minimum layover time for Lima airport.
Visit the Lima airport website for the most up to date recommendations.

Layover Hotel Suggestions
If you’re planning to stay in a hotel during your journey to or from Caya Shobo, we can recommend some of our preferred options.

Lima airport
Wyndham Costa Del Sol is located inside the airport grounds and is an easy walk across the street from Lima airport arrival gates. They also have a decent 24/7 restaurant in-house.

Miraflores
If you have extra time to explore Lima we recommend the safe, attractive area of Miraflores which boasts some of Peru’s best restaurants and a selection of hotels to suit any budget.

Iquitos
Iquitos isn’t especially known for it’s amazing hotels. But if you’re arriving late at night or want to see the city, we can recommend:: Casa Morey, Victoria Regia, Nativa Apartments.
Disclaimer: Caya Shobo does not assume any liability for suggested 3rd party services, facilities, or experiences. It is your sole responsibility to conduct your own research and make an informed decision based on your own needs.
Getting around in Peru
Motocars, taxis, Uber

If you need transport to/from a hotel in Peru we recommend arranging it with your hotel before you travel. Or take an authorized taxi from Lima airport. The taxi company booking desks are located just outside arrivals.
In Iquitos it is convenient to get around in 3-wheeled moto-cars that you can easily flag down from the street. In general in Peru we recommend confirming the price of the trip before you get in any car.
A pickup with an independent moto-car driver from your Iquitos hotel or Iquitos airport is included in your Ayahuasca Retreat reservation at Caya Shobo. Please be sure to let us know your hotel or flight arrival details.

What to bring
Light-weight clothing and natural toiletries

The jungle is warm and humid. Mosquitos aren’t usually too bad at the center, although some people are more sensitive and there can be more bugs after rainfall.
It’s best to choose light-weight clothes with both long and short sleeves, plus shirts, shorts or pants made of light, breathable, preferably natural fabric. If you prefer tight fitted clothing, bring a light-weight baggy over-layer. A light-weight rain jacket or rain poncho is essential.
For shoes, most people prefer a sturdy pair of flip-flops or river sandles. If you want to go for a forest hike, bring sneakers or hiking shoes that cover your feet.
Bring a small flash light or headlamp, preferably with a red light for use during Ayahuasca Ceremonies. Different light intensity settings can be useful for walking around outside at night. Bring extra batteries.
You may want a good quality mosquito repellant. Picaridin repellants are less toxic but more effective then DEET. An essential oil blend such as Tea Tree, Citronella and Geranium can also be a good natural choice. Avoid Permethrin which is highly toxic.
Peppermint Essential Oil, perhaps mixed with Lavender Oil is the best natural treatment for itchy mosquito bites.
Zip lock bags are useful to store perishables or stinky wet stuff (laundry service is included at the center). If you bring electronic equipment it’s best to keep it in a zip lock bag with moisture remover satchels and turn it on frequently to dry it out. Please note this is not guaranteed protection against humidity damage!
Toiletries & other supplies:
- Soap, shampoo & conditioner – preferably natural
- Natural deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc
- Ear plugs & eye mask
- Cleansing wipes, tissues
- Sunglasses – cheap ones
- BIC lighter or similar
What not to bring:
- Makeup
- Jewelry or valuable things.
- Alpha-hydroxy skin products (mosquitos love them)
- Recreational substances, including vapes
