Electricity & Safe Drinking Water

Showers fed with fresh running lagoon water

Lagoon at Caya Shobo traditional Shipibo Ayahuasca retreat center, Peru

Caya Shobo is off-grid, powered by our own generator which needs time to cool off and rest at various times throughout the day. Electricity is available in the early mornings, during lunch preparation, and in the early evenings.

Being off-grid, we are not connected to a municipal supply of potable water. We buy filtered drinking water from an Iquitos supplier who we consider to have the best quality and best tasting water in the area.

In our showers and sink taps the water comes from our own lagoon which is fed by a constantly running stream. This water is not potable, and may sometimes be discolored with natural sediment that is stirred up with rain. This water is safe for showering and washing hands.

Things to expect in the jungle

Warm, humid & full of life - in all its stages

jungle insect at Master Plant Dieta retreat center in Peru, traditional Shipibo plant medicine

The Amazon jungle is teeming with life and everything is in a constant, rapid process of renewal. There’s beautiful wildlife like exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, frogs, sloths and iguana. But there’s also sometimes scary creatures like snakes, bats, spiders and other insects.

It’s warm, humid and there’s tonnes of fresh air. But there’s also fungus, dust, pollen, leaves and decay. Small animal droppings and insects are a fact of life. Our maintenance team are dedicated to ensuring our structures and spaces remain sound and clean. But we obviously cannot completely sanitize your experience of the constant explosion of life in the jungle.

It’s not that common to meet a snake. But if you do, our maintenance and security team is at hand to keep you (and the snake) safe. We keep anti-venom medication on site, although we have never had the need to use it.

Generally the noises of jungle life are supportive to healing and relaxation. Sometimes though, it can feel disruptive, including from small town settlements nearby as sound carries easily over the jungle. We do our best to maintain the tranquility and most of the time that’s how it is.

If you can put up with a shift from the ideal of perfect Western order you will love the healing energy of nature at its richest. If you’re just feeling a little nervous, don’t be. Our wonderfully caring team will take care and help you feel right at home!
